Windsurfing is a cross between sailing and surfing. Both balance and core stability are needed as the sailor stands on a surf-styled board holding an attached sail by the boom -- a curved bar that loops around the sail for steering -- while maneuvering over the water using the wind for propulsion.
Typical costs:
Beginning windsurfing opportunities at beaches and lakes cost about $70-$140 per day, including equipment, depending on location and class length. Shorter two-hour courses are available in some locations at $70-$95 per session, but include little water time. A two-day group lesson is priced about $165-$200. Kid's day camps cost $90 per day or $150 for a two-day lesson for ages 7-12.
Windsurfing day camps offer consecutive training days for beginners at about $300-$400 for three days or $500 for four days and typically includes instruction, video analysis, and gear rental of the board, mast, sail and boom.
Private windsurfing lessons are $50-$90 per hour, per person depending on location. These typically do not include gear.
During beginning instruction all gear[1] including the board, sail and helmet are typically included. Some packages include a wetsuit.
Goals for the typical first day include getting on the board, sailing out, turning and safety. On the second day, steering and high-wind stance are taught. At the intermediate[2] level, expect to learn water starts and how to use a harness, which wraps around the sailor's middle to hold some of the body weight.
Additional costs:
Prices for rentals vary by level with the equipment for the more advanced sailor costing the most. Beginning rental gear costs about $35 for two hours or $55 for four hours. Intermediate level equipment rental price is about $50 for two hours or $80 for four hours plus $10 for a harness. Wetsuit rentals for all levels cost an additional $10-$15.
Purchasing wind surfing gear[3] also varies by the skill level of the sailor. For example, boards are priced about $750-$2,900, with the 33-pound beginner Bic Beach 175D[4] costing about $800 and the Kona One racing board about $1,800. Full-body wetsuits cost $120-$450, depending on thickness, sails[5] are priced $300-$900, helmets cost about $100-$170, harnesses $90-$150 and gloves $30-$45.
Additional help for beginners may be found through DVDs that cost about $30-$40.
Discounts:
Buying multiple lessons may save $25-$80 on a two- or three-day session.
Gear discounts may be available for prior students at certain locations for savings of about $200.
Shopping for windsurfing:
US Sailing maintains a list of windsurfing schools by state.
Before Windsurfing, check out the company through the Better Business Bureau[6] , be aware of local risks and regulations[7] in the sailing area and follow state and US Coast Guard safety recommendations[8] .
