Elliptical trainers combine the cardiovascular benefits of a treadmill with the muscle-building workout of a cross-country ski machine. Machines have an average weight limit of 250 pounds, but mid-range and high-end models can support up to 350 pounds.
Typical costs:
Most durable ellpitical training machines that can support 250 lbs+, provide a smooth action, are durable, and support an 18" or longer stride run $2,000+. But there are good machines available for less.
Durability, features and stride length drive costs. The trick to buying the right machine is testing its durability in a store, then determining which features are important to you.
Low-range models with less durability cost $300 to $1,000. ProForm's 160 CrossTrainer Elliptical[1] for $700 has an 18" stride, an interactive trainer and 5 workouts. NordicTrack's CX 1050[2] for $700 features an 18-inch stride with 19 workout programs.
Mid-range models with fair durability cost $1,000 to $2,000. NordicTrack offers the Elite 1300[3] for $1,500, which features a 20-inch stride, 15 workout programs and oversized pedals.
Precor, whose models are often found in gyms, offers its top-of-the-line EFX5.23 for $4,400. It offers a calorie counter, distance setting and workout summary not equipped on the EFX5.21i for $3,800.
Many machines are at least 5 feet long by 5 feet high, but there are fold-up models in the low range that are designed for small workout areas. NordicTrack's SpaceSaver [4] stores in a 3-foot space for $1,000. ProForm also sells a SpaceSaver[5] for $800.
Regardless of cost, machines should offer adjustable settings for weight resistance and height to enhance a workout. Better models offer one-touch console features that track workout time and intensity.
Gym-quality models often include oversized pedals, programmable exercise routines, heart rate monitors, MP3 adaptors and a calorie-burning counter.
Machines often require self-assembly but should come with at least a one-year warranty on the frame, moveable parts and labor. Better models carry lifetime frame warranties.
Discounts:
NordicTrack [6] and ProForm [7] offer discounts of up to 20 percent for online orders. Many manufacturers offer free shipping online.

The model was originally listed at $900 - I watched and waited until it went on sale at $500.// these things have a huge mark-up. find one you like and take your time. here is a hint from a saleman - buy on a day when the place was busy later in the day -mangers have wiggle room on price. He was in a good mood and dropped $50 0ff the $550 sales price. Also test it at the store for at least it minutes. break a sweat. If it gets off balance or unsteady move on.
